TETFund Completes 15-Year-Old Abandoned ICC at BUK — A Landmark for Kano University
TETFund Completes and Commissions 15-Year-Old Abandoned ICC at BUK
The Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) has successfully completed and commissioned the long-abandoned International Conference Centre (ICC) located at Bayero University Kano (BUK), which had remained unfinished for over 15 years. The Executive Secretary of TETFund, Arc. Sonny Echono, presided over the inauguration, declaring the centre completed in line with modern global standards and ready for multipurpose use.
The new facility boasts over 38 accommodation rooms, spacious halls, and open landscaped spaces ideal for international conferences, university functions, and revenue-generating events. Echono described it as a “world-class” and “iconic” structure, signaling the shift in TETFund’s strategy toward high-impact landmark infrastructure rather than piecemeal constructions.
The conference centre was originally conceived by former Vice-Chancellor Prof. Abubakar Abdulrasheed but languished incomplete until President Bola Tinubu’s “Renewed Hope Agenda” revived momentum for stalled educational projects. According to Echono, this agenda encouraged TETFund to address distressed and abandoned projects, resulting in the rehabilitation and commissioning of the ICC.
Echono emphasized the broader significance of such facilities: they elevate the architectural identity of campuses, bolster institutional prestige, and offer new revenue streams. On commissioning day, he urged BUK’s leadership to ensure proper maintenance and optimal usage of the facility to preserve its value and impact.
BUK Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Adamu Abbas, expressed gratitude to TETFund for completing the long-delayed project. He encouraged his successors to use the ICC as intended, to host academic, social, and professional events that bridge the university and its wider community.
