Former Oyo State Governor, Senator Rashidi Ladoja, has held his first meeting with the Olubadan-in-Council, bringing a fresh wave of unity and reconciliation to the traditional leadership of Ibadanland. The meeting, which took place in Ibadan, comes after months of speculation about whether Ladoja would formally return to the council following past disagreements.

Ladoja, who holds the title of Osi Olubadan, is one of the most senior chiefs in the traditional hierarchy leading to the Olubadan stool. His presence at the meeting was warmly received by other members of the council, signaling a renewed spirit of cooperation among the traditional leaders of the ancient city.

For years, there had been tension within the Olubadan-in-Council following the 2017 chieftaincy reforms introduced during the administration of the late Governor Abiola Ajimobi. The reforms had elevated some chiefs to crown-wearing obas, a move which Ladoja opposed strongly at the time. His position created divisions within the council, with many wondering if the differences could ever be resolved.

By attending the meeting, Ladoja appears to have turned a new page, prioritizing the unity and stability of Ibadan’s traditional institution over old disputes. According to reports, discussions at the meeting were cordial, and members expressed happiness that the Osi Olubadan had finally rejoined their deliberations.

The Olubadan-in-Council is a critical body in Ibadan’s traditional structure, as it plays a major role in the administration of the city’s customs and also advises the Olubadan of Ibadanland. Every member of the council progresses through a long and structured hierarchy, which eventually leads to the Olubadan throne. As Osi Olubadan, Ladoja is in line for the revered seat, making his active participation in the council very significant.

Political observers believe that Ladoja’s return to the council meetings will strengthen both the traditional and political relevance of Ibadan. His influence as a former governor and respected leader in Oyo State makes him an important figure, and his role in the council could bring more credibility and stability to the institution.

Many residents of Ibadan have welcomed the development, saying it is a step in the right direction for peace and unity. Some community members also expressed hope that the reconciliation among the council members will bring progress, particularly in resolving matters relating to tradition and development of the city.

The Olubadan stool is one of the most respected traditional thrones in Yorubaland, known for its unique succession system that is based strictly on hierarchy. Unlike other monarchies, Ibadan has a clear and transparent process for producing an Olubadan, with chiefs moving step by step until they eventually ascend the throne. This system has been widely praised for its fairness and absence of disputes that usually plague other traditional systems in Nigeria.

Ladoja’s presence at the council is, therefore, a reassurance that the system remains intact and respected. It also puts to rest speculations that he might remain outside the council indefinitely due to past disagreements. His decision to rejoin is being interpreted as a personal sacrifice for the sake of tradition and the unity of Ibadanland.

The significance of the meeting goes beyond tradition. It also carries political undertones, as Ibadan remains a powerful voice in Oyo State politics. With the 2027 elections drawing nearer, Ladoja’s role within the council could influence alignments and political conversations within the state. However, for now, his participation is being celebrated mainly as a traditional milestone.

In Ibadan today, the news of Ladoja’s return to the Olubadan-in-Council is being described as historic. For the people, it is a symbol of reconciliation, maturity, and dedication to preserving the cultural heritage of the city.

As the council continues its activities, expectations are high that this renewed spirit of unity will strengthen the institution and ensure that the Olubadan throne continues to command respect across Nigeria.
