Prioritise tourism in Nigeria — Tourism experts, policymakers, and industry stakeholders have renewed calls for the Nigerian government to prioritise tourism as a strategic sector for national development.

Speaking at a recent tourism investment summit held in Abuja, participants emphasised that Nigeria’s untapped tourism potential remains one of the most viable alternatives to oil as a major revenue source. From natural wonders to cultural heritage, Nigeria boasts vast attractions capable of drawing millions of domestic and international tourists.

“Tourism is more than sightseeing; it’s a tool for economic diversification, cultural preservation, and job creation,” said Dr. Bisi Ogunsanya, a tourism economist and one of the panelists at the event.

According to the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), tourism contributes over 10% to global GDP and supports 1 in every 10 jobs worldwide — a model Nigeria is yet to fully harness.

🇳🇬 What Nigeria Stands to Gain by Prioritising Tourism:

  1. Economic Diversification – Reduces dependence on crude oil.
  2. Job Creation – Empowers rural communities through hospitality and travel services.
  3. Global Perception – Improves Nigeria’s image abroad.
  4. Cultural Diplomacy – Promotes Nigerian culture globally.
  5. Increased Foreign Investment – Attracts tourism-related infrastructure development.

Speakers at the event also called for improved tourism policies, public-private partnerships, better security, and increased promotion of local destinations.

Minister of Tourism and Culture, Hon. Lydia Aremu, affirmed that the Tinubu administration is reviewing its National Tourism Master Plan to better position the sector for growth.

“We are committed to repositioning Nigeria as a leading tourism destination in Africa,” she said.

Tour operators and cultural entrepreneurs alike agree that with proper infrastructure, marketing, and investment, Nigeria can generate billions from tourism annually, while also preserving its rich traditions and landscapes for future generations.
