NIHSA Issues Urgent Flood Warning for 28 States Including Ado-Ekiti

In a worrying forecast, the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) has issued a red-alert flood warning for 28 Nigerian states including Ado-Ekiti, cautioning residents to prepare for severe flooding expected between July 22 and August 5, 2025. Over 739 communities across 162 LGAs are listed in the high-risk category.

In Ekiti State, Ado-Ekiti, Ikere, and Ido-Osi LGAs are flagged as vulnerable to heavy rainfall and flash flooding. Coastal and inland areas like Lagos, Rivers, Benue, Ogun, Nasarawa, and Oyo are also on alert due to rising river levels and blocked drainages.

The Minister of Water Resources, Engr. Joseph Utsev, emphasized a community-based approach to preparedness and flood risk management. Meanwhile, NEMA has urged local councils to activate emergency response plans and begin early evacuation in the most exposed zones.

As the climate crisis intensifies, urgent awareness, relocation, and drainage control could mean the difference between safety and disaster.
