Aviation Unions Suspend Planned Strike After Govt Talks Promise New Pay

Four major aviation unions in Nigeria have suspended their planned nationwide strike over poor remuneration, following significant progress in negotiations with the Federal Government.

The unions; National Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE), Air Transport Services Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (ATSSSAN), Association of Nigeria Aviation Professionals (ANAP), and the Amalgamated Union of Public Corporations, Civil Service Technical and Recreational Services Employees (AUPCTRE), had earlier issued a strike notice effective Monday.

In a joint statement, the unions said they decided to defer the industrial action after the Minister of Aviation and senior ministry officials intervened, alongside the release of a “no objection” letter from the Budget Office to the National Incomes, Salaries and Wages Commission.

They also cited assurances from the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) that the long-awaited new remuneration package will be implemented and paid alongside August salaries.

“The strike is being deferred until the end of the month, pending further developments,” the statement read, urging members to remain hopeful.

Background

The unions have been pushing for improved wages for months, arguing that aviation workers are essential to national economic stability and safety. Poor remuneration, they say, has contributed to low morale and the risk of losing skilled workers to other industries.

With the latest government commitments, workers are cautiously optimistic that the changes will be implemented without further delays.
