ABUAD, Hoist Life Safety Systems Partner to Tackle Petrol Tanker Fire Accidents in Nigeria

Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti (ABUAD) and Hoist Life Safety Systems Limited have announced a strategic partnership aimed at tackling Nigeria’s recurring petrol tanker fire accidents.

The Managing Director of Hoist Life Safety Systems, Mr. Adeleye Oladimeji, disclosed the initiative during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Sunday.

According to Oladimeji, the collaboration will involve training a specialized team from ABUAD to gain advanced knowledge in breaking the hydrocarbon chain of vehicles carrying inflammable substances during accidents, a chemical approach that could significantly reduce fire outbreaks.

“That problem is purely chemistry. With our partnership with Afe Babalola University coming on board, we will be able to tackle it. The Federal Government is concerned, and we have the solution,” Oladimeji stated.

Science Meets Safety

He explained that the firm has conducted experiments on the use of specific solvents that, when added to a fuel truck’s payload, could neutralize the risk of explosion or fire during an accident. This method mirrors safety practices already used in the oil and gas industry.

Faster Response Through Technology

Oladimeji also revealed plans to improve machine-to-machine communication and SMS alert systems to ensure firefighters and emergency responders receive timely and accurate information. This, he said, would not only prevent delays but also reduce the risk of casualties among first responders.

“Our goal is to move firefighting services closer to the people, either through local stations or mobile fire appliances, to enhance response time,” he added.

The partnership reflects growing national efforts to address tanker fire accidents, which have caused significant loss of lives, property, and economic resources in Nigeria.
