Tinubu Nominates 39-Year-Old Ramat as NERC CEO in Major Power Sector Reform

Tinubu nominates Ramat NERC CEO, a move that signals President Bola Tinubu’s renewed commitment to energy sector reform and regulatory innovation.

On Thursday, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, confirmed that Engr. Abdullahi Garba Ramat, aged 39, has been nominated as the new Chairman and CEO of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC).

Ramat, a certified electrical engineer with a PhD in Strategic Management, replaces Sanusi Garba and is set to bring youth, technical depth, and strategic oversight to the nation’s top electricity regulatory body.

Alongside Ramat, the President also nominated:

Mr. Abubakar Yusuf – Commissioner for Consumer Affairs

Dr. Fouad Olayinka Animashun – Commissioner for Finance and Management Services

While all nominations are pending Senate confirmation, President Tinubu has directed Engr. Ramat to assume the role in acting capacity to avoid a leadership vacuum.

“These appointments are part of our commitment to reform the power sector and ensure universal electricity access,” the President stated, urging the nominees to deliver on the administration’s transformative goals.

This nomination adds to a growing list of bold reforms under Tinubu’s leadership, especially in power sector efficiency, regulatory overhaul, and infrastructure modernization.

NERC, as the regulator of Nigeria’s electricity market, plays a vital role in tariff setting, consumer protection, and investment oversight. Observers say Ramat’s appointment could mark a turning point in how power policy is executed in Nigeria.
