Ohanaeze Ndigbo Condemns Reports of Children’s Torture in Rivers State

Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the foremost Igbo socio-cultural body, has issued a powerful condemnation of reports that children were subjected to torture in Rivers State. The group has called on relevant authorities to launch an immediate and transparent investigation, ensure the safety of affected children, and ensure justice is served.

In a strongly worded statement, Ohanaeze emphasized that the torture of children is a grave violation of human dignity and international rights standards. The organization appealed to the Rivers State Government, the Police, and child protection agencies to act swiftly and compassionately. They urged that all identified victims be protected with appropriate care and trauma-informed interventions.

The statement underlined that no child, regardless of background or circumstance, deserves to endure such cruel treatment. “Children should be nurtured, not harmed. Those responsible for these abominable acts must be held fully accountable by both legal and moral standards,” the statement read in part.

Ohanaeze also extended its call to the Federal Government and civil society organizations, urging them to intervene and provide support systems for affected children, including counseling, legal aid, and medical treatment.

As this alarming issue unfolds, Ohanaeze reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the rights and welfare of Igbo children across Nigeria. The group promised to closely monitor developments and ensure that justice and compassion prevail in the days to come.
