Federal University of Lafia Bans Sign-Out Celebrations
The management of the Federal University of Lafia (FULafia) has announced a complete ban on sign-out celebrations within its campus premises.
The directive, issued by the university’s registrar and made available to newsmen on Monday, emphasized that the decision was taken to safeguard lives, maintain academic decorum, and prevent disruptive incidents associated with such celebrations.
Sign-out celebrations; often marked by students writing on each other’s clothes, engaging in loud music, and hosting public gatherings, have become a long-standing tradition for graduating students in many Nigerian universities. However, university authorities say the practice has, in some cases, led to unsafe situations, rowdy behavior, and even accidents.
“The university is committed to maintaining an atmosphere conducive to learning and free from activities that could disrupt peace and order. Students are therefore advised to comply strictly with this directive,” the statement read.
The management noted that any student or group found flouting the ban would face disciplinary actions in line with the institution’s regulations.
While some students expressed disappointment, arguing that sign-out events are a harmless way to mark the end of their academic journey, others acknowledged the school’s concerns, especially over safety risks.
Security personnel have also been instructed to enforce the ban and ensure that gatherings linked to sign-out celebrations do not take place anywhere within the campus.
This decision comes amid a broader trend of Nigerian universities reviewing student activities to ensure they align with institutional values and do not compromise security
