Kaduna State Launches ‘First 1000 Days of Life’ Initiative to Promote Breastfeeding and Child Survival

In a bold move to improve child survival and maternal health, the Kaduna State Government has officially launched the First 1000 Days of Life Initiative. The programme was unveiled during the 2025 World Breastfeeding Week celebration in Kaduna under the theme: “Prioritize Breastfeeding: Create a Sustainable Support System.”

Deputy Governor Dr. Hadiza Sabuwa Balarabe described the initiative as a game-changer in reducing malnutrition and boosting early childhood development. She highlighted that exclusive breastfeeding in Kaduna stands at only 41%, based on the 2021 MICS report—an “unacceptably low” rate that requires urgent multi-level action.

The new programme integrates vital services such as postnatal care, breastfeeding support, micronutrient supplementation, clean water access, and inclusion in health insurance schemes.

Commissioner for Health, Hajiya Umma K. Ahmed, also commissioned a crèche at the Ministry of Health to support working mothers. She emphasized the importance of safe and dignified breastfeeding environments.

UNICEF Kaduna Field Officer, Lucia Soleti, praised the state’s commitment, stressing that “breastfeeding saves lives and must be protected.”

This initiative aligns with Governor Uba Sani’s vision to strengthen health systems and invest in human capital across the state.

“Let this not end with a week of celebration,” said Dr. Balarabe. “Let us invest in breastfeeding because it’s an investment in our children’s future.”
