The recent Kwam-1 fiasco has sparked big conversations in Nigeria. It all started when Fuji musician Kwam 1 tried to board a flight with a suspicious flask. Reports say he got angry, sprayed the flask’s contents at the pilot, and blocked the plane from leaving. Shockingly, no quick arrest was made.
Not long after, another case happened. Comfort Emmanson, a regular passenger, got into a fight with Ibom Air staff after she was not allowed to leave the aircraft. Unlike Kwam-1, she was quickly arrested and taken to court.
These two events show a painful truth, VIPs are treated differently from ordinary people. The ThisDay editorial says Nigeria must take this as a lesson to improve security and fairness.
Here are the simple lessons Nigeria must learn:
- Security rules should be the same for everyone. Celebrities, politicians, or ordinary citizens, all passengers should face the same checks and rules.
- Medical needs should be allowed but verified. If a passenger needs to carry liquids for health reasons, there should be a doctor’s note to prove it.
- Violence should have consequences. Any passenger who fights or threatens staff must face quick and fair punishment, no matter who they are.
- Airport staff should be respectful. Security officers and cabin crew must handle issues calmly and with good communication.
- Incidents should be reviewed. Each time something like this happens, aviation authorities must study it and make changes to avoid repeat mistakes.
The Kwam-1 case should not just be gossip, it should be a turning point. Nigeria must build an aviation system that is fair, safe, and professional.
