NSCIA Applauds Katsina Governor for Reintroducing Christian Religious Studies in Schools

The Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), led by the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, has commended Governor Dikko Umaru Radda of Katsina State for reintroducing Christian Religious Studies (CRS) in both primary and secondary schools across the state.

In a statement by NSCIA Secretary-General Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, the decision was described as an act of justice, fairness, and inclusivity, reflecting Islamic principles of equity. The Council highlighted how Prophet Muhammad (SAW) protected minority worship rights in early Islamic history, drawing parallels to the governor’s policy move.

The NSCIA praised the gesture as essential for building a just society grounded in tolerance and respect for diversity. It also urged governors in Christian-majority states, where Islamic Religious Studies remain restricted, to mirror the example set by Governor Radda.

This policy has won support from other Christian bodies as well. The Northern Christian Youth Professionals (NCYP) called the move a “bold step” toward interfaith harmony and a reflection of Gov. Radda’s inclusive leadership. They also celebrated the approval of monthly stipends for pastors, acknowledging that the initiative promotes peace and moral development.

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in Northern Nigeria joined the praise, urging faith-based reciprocity across states. CAN emphasized that the inclusion of religious studies for minority faiths is a constitutional right and vital for moral upbringing and social cohesion.
