Federal Polytechnic Bauchi Shuts Down After Violent Student Protests

Share on Social Media:

Federal Polytechnic Bauchi has been closed indefinitely by its management following a violent protest triggered by a nighttime armed robbery at the male students’ hostel. The disturbance escalated into chaos, prompting swift action to ensure safety and campus security.

The incident began early Monday when robbers wielding machetes and firearms invaded the male hostel in the Gwallameji area, injuring two students and stealing valuables including smartphones and laptops. Angered by the breach and fearing for their safety, students staged a protest the next morning at the polytechnic’s main gate. They blocked the adjacent Bauchi–Dass federal highway, burned tires, and disrupted traffic, demanding urgent intervention. The Students’ Union Government President, Haruna Umar, condemned the robbery as unprecedented.

What started as a peaceful demonstration turned violent when suspected hoodlums joined the fray. Police resorted to using tear gas to restore order, prompting stone-throwing from students in retaliation. Unverified reports also indicated that a student might have been shot during the unrest.
